"Art has the ability to deepen our understanding
of the human experience, - of our understanding of our spirituality, and of our relationship - as
consciousness - to the physical realm."
Just as humans have always constructed environments and objects to support their lives and
activities, time and use have eroded them, resulting in a never-ending cycle of
construction, deconstruction - destruction and reconstruction.
My work is an ongoing conversation about this cycle, and an environment whos human
inhabitants and material components take on the inevitable patinas, textures and
deformities which result from time spent in this material world.
My new series results from a personal intuitive dialog which is not about reference
and is not derivative. Each new creation fuses an eclectic mix of materials, fragments
and artifacts which have the potential to become a new landscape which salvages and speaks
of its past as well as the present. In the gathering of the materials I am an "Urban Archeologist."
Each new work of art results - primarily - from my willingness to relinquish control and
forethought and to allow the piece to create itself by following my emotional response
to the relationships created by the materials themselves. This creative process is
basically the same as that referred to as "process painting." At times my desire to control
the creative process, rather than trusting my intuition, - puts me at odds with myself,
just as issues of control and yielding - test and perplex each of us throughout life.
I have learned that the more I "trust" the process, the more powerful and authentic
the resulting work will become. This lesson illuminates the importance of using the
same approach to daily life, in order to let life "flow" naturally.
This new series blends Modernist views of order, unity, and coherence,
with Post Modernist views of disorder, fragmentation, and chaos. This combinining
of opposing theories - or forces - , gives the viewer an opportunity to explore
unresolved issues from both schools of thought, and to consider the role of their
combined relationship in everyday life.
"EXPERIMENTALS" & "DECORATIVES" "As the series develops, various
pieces require experimentation which takes me away from the core theme - (as I understand it) -
in order to further and deepen its development. Two distinct areas have emerged. EXPERIMENTALS
are works which incorporate new ideas, techniques, or objects. DECORATIVES, while utilizing found materials
and objects from everyday life, are more graphic, or, orderly in appearance. Their creative process
is less intuitive and much more planned."
