As a visual artist, Yolanda M. Lopez is best known for her seminal piece "Portrait of the Artist as the Virgin of Guadalupe,"an investigation of this Mexican religious and national icon as a powerful female figure. Classically trained as an artist, Lopez's work has expanded into installation, video and slide presentations. Her video "When You Think of Mexico: Images of Mexicans in the Media" has toured internationally and is collected in university liberaries nationally. She is currently revising this 1986 video for our new global culture. The work in this exhibit takes Lopez back to her roots as a painter who loves to draw, and mixes it with her love/hate relationship with the Mexican tourist arts of her youth growing up as she did, on the San Diego/Tijuana border.
