The Assignment: One of the most interesting assignments I have ever had was the opportunity to create a complete integrated collateral program for Landor Associates, one of the largest and best known design firms in the world. The obvious question is "why call us?", and the reason was simple. Numerous attempts to complete the project in-house had been abandoned due to conflicting points of view about the design approach and who would get to do it. We were called in by David Poe ( head of the collateral division ), as one of two outside design teams to develop an approach. Most interesting is that it was determined that the project would be top secret with only three people - including Walter Landor - knowing about it. The Solution: We developed a very simple and bold look and a visual format that united many collateral pieces including the main corporate capabilities brochure (left middle and bottom), individual brochures for the various divisions / packaging, ID, etc. / (middle right), project case histories (far right), and a newsletter (left side). Additionally we created two presentation packages shown top row. One was a horizontal glossy black box (left), and a deluxe black horizontal box (right). The presentation packages were high gloss black with a heavy protective varnish. The division brochures were a matte silver with matte varnish. Not shown here -unfortunately-is the big four panel center fold-out on the corporate brochure. It was a knockout display of a cross section of Landor's best known design projects. The Application: Our design was selected and approved by Walter Landor and the Landor "team" for production. Then disaster struck when a small local printer put out a black brochure with a rainbow band running across the top. Given that Landor was an internationally known firm and that its main audience was an international clientele, we felt that there was no problem. But that was enough to put the project in a holding pattern where it eventually stalled and ended up on the shelf. |
