brochure. The symbol program for the University, two temples and nine schools. The Assignment: Wailua stands as one of the most interesting and unusual clients and assignments that I have encountered over the years. I produced this project while a designer with Max Landphere & Associates in 1971. Originally the client requested a poster, but when I reviewed who they were and where they wanted to go, it was clear that they needed much more. Comprised of nine schools and two temples the organization was using logos, symbols, logotypes and communications of every type and description. Clearly, we needed to create one distinctive image that would unify all of the various communications before moving forward with the application to the many communications. The Solution: A primary symbol, or logo, was developed for the university. This represented a group in meditation and the expanding self. Next, secondary logos were created for the other nine schools and two temples. All secondary logos conformed to the circular shape and were purely abstract in content, thus encouraging individual interpretation. This concept worked well with the introspective nature of the university and inspired a great deal of enjoyable analysis and debate on the part of the students and faculty alike. Additionally a graphic standards manual was developed which outlined the correct use of all design elements-including typography-on all future publications. Application: The new image was applied to all printed materials, including course materials, tapes, posters, books, luggage stickers, stationery and business cards, internal forms, packaging and banners. |
