Unauthorized Vehicles is one of my favorites. It is also
an important marker in the series - for it is here that I began to incorporate collage elements
with letterforms and text - creating a shift in the series. At this point I also moved away
( for the time being ) from metal and glass as the primary art making materials.
In this piece there is an interesting
relationship consisting of order and chaos - much like many of our lives. An unyielding
symetrical composition contains elements and surfaces that have begun a process of natural
deterioration. The shine of rolled metal contrasts with flaking paint
and dull-surfaced tar paper. This amazing sign ( a work of art in itself ) was a particular
challenge as I found it necessary to glue hundreds of flakes of paint and then add layers of
"Dead Flat Lacquor" in order to
preserve it. The wood frame is framed in eighth inch thick annodized aluminum at a depth of about two inches.
